A Busy Month & a Half...

The 100-year-old building facade retains its original brick
made at Toronto's Don Valley Brickworks. Cut into the face
of the building are three vertical openings which house new
mahogany thermal pane windows, and a custom door, all
dressed in limestone. The original cornice beam, covered in
plywood during construction, will be capped in stainless steel.
The walkway entry will have a new mahogany gate.

The rear of the house has custom mahogany windows and
a 17 foot sliding glass door with stucco surround and
limestone sill.

The atrium, cut out of the original part of the building
now features eleven mahogany windows which bring
light into almost every room in the house.

A contemporary solid mahogany door leads into the open concept
kitchen, dining and living space.

There's never a dull moment on this project! We arrived one
morning to find some local wildlife had gotten into serious trouble.
A frequent visitor to the job site over the last year, a 30 lb.
male raccoon had slipped and gotten himself wedged between the
buildings and couldn't get free.

The guys from SWAT arrived quickly and gently snared the big guy
who seems no worse for wear.

A local business, SWAT gets calls from all over the city. They're
now on their way to the northern outskirts of the city where they'll
release our friend in greener pastures.

The tile setter has begun the installation of
Italian porcelain tile for the studio shower
and floor. The low profile shower pan is
designed to sit almost flush with the
finished tile floor.

Attention to detail is important along the crisp window outlines.

The wet stucco sets quickly. To create a polished, unified, final result
the teams must work the entire surface in one application.

Over large and detailed surfaces the men work quickly
as a team for smoothness and accuracy.

to apply the final coat of the custom-mixed colour to the
rear and side of the building.

Dupont Project continues...

In many inner-city areas of Toronto water flows from the mains into
our homes through lead pipes. Water quality can be tested by
obtaining sample kits from your local Toronto Public Health Office.

When lead levels exceed acceptable amounts, the case is referred to
Toronto Water who will issue a Water Service Replacement Contract.
Costs for the work vary depending upon the length and size of pipe
to be replaced.

licensed contractors to replace lead with copper pipes at Dupont.

A laser is used in the trench to ensure the slope between the
two buildings will provide accurate drainage.

This trench from the main house to the studio/garage
will carry plumbing, gas and electrical services.

Brick & Limestone

The contemporary look of the twenty foot high window openings
add contrast to the antique brick facade. When complete, the
original wooden beam will be clad in stainless steel with
the windows framed in mahogany.

Each limestone block needs careful levelling.

The mason's assistant measures and marks a piece of limestone
which will dress the window openings on the facade.

The masons worked quickly, salvaging the old bricks and using
them to build the new openings for the atrium. After completion,
we looked out the study window and noticed that one of the
bricks bore the 100 year old print of a cat's paw.


The story of brickmaking is an important part of Toronto's
history. By the time our building was built circa 1909 there
were 34 brickyards in Toronto. The Don Valley Brick Works
(in operation from 1889 - 1989) led production with
a yearly quota of over 43-million bricks.

Soft mud, "John Price" bricks were made by tempering a
clay-sand mixture with up to 30 per cent water. This mixture
was forced into molds dusted with sand and chemicals.

Various proportions of borax, ferro-red or manganese dioxide
were used to produced the desired colour. After a series
of drying processes, the bricks were fired in small tunnel kilns.

To retain the character of the Dupont Street facade with respect
to the neighbouring buildings, it was critical to re-point and
replace the old bricks on the front and west side of the
building. Extra bricks from the atrium cut-away were saved
and used where needed.
